چکیده

We report the discovery of a new two-image gravitational lens candidate. The system RXJ0921+4529 contains two zs = 1.66 quasars separated by 6. 93 with an H band magnitude difference of ∆m = 1.39. The HST NIC2 H band images reveal an H=18.2 spiral galaxy between the quasar images, which is probably a member of a zl = 0.32 X-ray cluster centered on the field. We detect an extended source near the fainter quasar image but not in the brighter image. If this extended source is the host galaxy of the fainter quasar, then the system is a binary quasar rather than a gravitational lens. VLA observations at 3.6 cm reveal emission from the lens galaxy at the flux level of 1mJy and a marginal detection of the brighter quasar. Subject headings: cosmology: gravitational lensing — quasars: individual (RXJ0921+4528)

The coalescence of massive black hole binaries is one of the main sources of low-frequency gravitational radiation that can be detected by LISA. When two galaxies containing massive black holes merge, a binary forms at the center of the new galaxy. We discuss the evolution of the binary after its separation decreases below one parsec. Whether or not stellar dynamical processes can drive the bla...

In this paper, we discuss the benefits of ground-based, adaptive optics (AO) aided observations for star formation research. After outlining the general advantages, we present results obtained during the ALFA science demonstration programme in 1999. These results underline the absolute necessity of AO assistance for almost any kind of observations regarding star formation regions.

After a brief introduction to gravitational lensing theory, a rough overview of the types of gravitational lensing statistics that have been performed so far will be given. I shall then concentrate on recent results of galaxy-galaxy lensing, which indicate that galactic halos extend much further than can be probed via rotation of stars and gas.

New measurements of neutron-capture elements are presented for two very metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] ∼ −3). One (LP 625-44) has an s-process signature believed to be due to mass transfer from a now-extinct metal-poor AGB companion, and the second (CS 22897-008) is one of a number of very metal-poor stars having high [Sr/Ba] ratios which is not expected from the r-process. In the sprocess star, many...
